After a long break of 4 months, I am back this time to write about the preferences to be used while selecting different engineering streams in BITS. I received quite a few queries regarding the dilemma many prospective students are facing while deciding on the preferences to be given to various branches of engineering at BITS. I was approached by few students who gave their BITSAT tests and wanted to have info about various courses that are being offered at BITS. Not just the info, they wanted to know most importantly what kind of preferences to be given for the branches (or call it as disciplines). This post will be useful for studs who arent able to decide on what kind of courses they should take. So lets start demystifying the preference order.
BITS is a kinda a place where apart from the regular academics you learn a lot from the extra curriculars. The flexibilities offered at BITS are innumerable. From no attendance to attending unregistered classes, bunking classes to attending surprise tests, one-night ghoting, 2am fried Maggi...no doubt i still miss those golden days a lot :(. I can assure the prospective students that they will have very fond memories with BITS once they pass-out.
Few of the notable flexibilities pertaining to academics is the option of having DUAL degree. This enables student to pursue engineering in 2 different areas. For eg. few of my friends have dual degrees in various areas like Mechanical + Computer Science, Mathematics + EEE, Economics + Computer Science. There is also an option to completely switch from one stream to other stream say from Mechanical to EEE or Chemical to Instrumentation. You have another option of continuing the undergraduate course and convert it into a post-graduate degree like B.E (Hons.) EEE to M.E (Hons.) Embedded Systems. Apart from this we have the compulsary and optional Internship programs at the end of second year and in fourth year. All these flexibilities allow the students to design their career paths as per their needs and interests. All these features has made BITS one of the most sought after colleges for engineering in India. Students who pass-out from BITS also have very bright chances to get into top notch colleges for higher studies in India and abroad.
Many students might have already gone through the cut-offs for various branches at BITS (both Pilani and Goa). Let us once have a look at the cut-offs for various disciplines. The following details is also given in the BITS website.
"The cut-off BITSAT scores for admissions to I Semester 2007-08 to different programmes are given below. This is given here for information on the request of many candidates."

Since the Hyderabad campus has opened the gates for the students from this academic year (2008-09), the cut-offs are going to come down a little more. What could be the expected cut-offs?? To understand this lets do some maths now! Nearly one-lakh candidates registered for BITSAT-2007 and 68,466 candidates had registered for BITSAT-2006. As per the statistics available with the BITS, inBITSAT-2006 only 155 candidates could score above 400 while 1,241 candidates scored more than 350. Candidates with scores above 300 were 4,715 while candidates with scores 250 and above were 11,696. Though the candidates eligible were quite good in number, some would have missed the pre-requisite of a candidate obtaining a minimum of aggregate 80 per cent marks in physics, chemistry and mathematics subjects in the Intermediate examination, with at least 60 per cent marks in each of the Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics subjects. Now in 2007 the cut-off was around 275 (Lets consider only A-group and B-group streams) for Pilani and 271 for Goa. With 600 seats getting added (Hyderabad campus) I am expecting the cut off to come down to 255 - 260. But with 6 new IITs starting this year (tentative), another 700 seats will be available to grab ! That means the BITSAT cut-off can reduce further to around 245 - 250. But the cut-offs for popular streams like EEE, Computer Science, E&I, Mechanical might not come down. The general feedback says that BITSAT-08 exam was tougher than last year.
Now let us assume that a student X got around 310 marks and now has to give in the preferences of the various courses. The first foremost thing he should take care about is his career goals. Questions like career goals, ambitions, interests in specific fields etc. should be taken into consideration while deciding the preferences. But the general scenario is that the student coming out of 12th standard do not have much knowledge about the courses, and even if they have the knowledge then they cant decide on their areas of interest. So this student X is of similar type who does not have any specific interests in any field but has inclination to be in the most popular branches (EEE, E&I, CSC etc.). So here goes his preferences:
- B.E (Hons.) Computer Science - Pilani
- B.E (Hons.) EEE - Pilani
- B.E (Hons.) E&I - Pilani
- B.E (Hons.) Mechanical - Pilani
- MSc (Hons.) Mathematics - Pilani
- Msc (Hons.) Economics - Pilani
- Msc (Hons.) Physics - Pilani
- Msc (Hons.) Chemistry - Pilani
- Msc (Hons.) Biology - Pilani
- Msc (Tech.) Information Systems - Pilani
- B.E (Hons.) Computer Science - Goa
- B.E (Hons.) EEE - Goa
- B.E (Hons.) E&I - Goa
- B.E (Hons.) Computer Science - Hyderabad
- B.E (Hons.) ECE - Hyderabad
- B.E (Hons.) EEE - Hyderabad
- MSc (Hons.) Mathematics - Goa
- Msc (Hons.) Economics - Goa
- Msc (Hons.) Physics - Goa
- Msc (Hons.) Chemistry - Goa
- Msc (Hons.) Biology - Goa
- B.E (Hons.) Mechanical - Goa
- MSc (Hons.) Mathematics - Hyderabad
- Msc (Hons.) Economics - Hyderabad
- Msc (Hons.) Physics - Hyderabad
- Msc (Hons.) Chemistry - Hyderabad
- Msc (Hons.) Biology - Hyderabad
- B.E (Hons.) Mechanical - Hyderabad
- B.E (Hons.) Chemical - Pilani
- B.E (Hons.) Civil - Pilani
- Msc (Tech.) Information Systems - Goa
- Msc (Tech.) Information Systems - Hyderabad
- B.E (Hons.) Chemical - Goa
- B.E (Hons.) Civil - Goa
- B.E (Hons.) Chemical - Hyderabad
- B.E (Hons.) Civil - Hyderabad
- B.Pharm (Hons.) - Pilani
- B.Pharm (Hons.) - Hyderabad
- MSc (Tech.) Finance - Pilani
- MSc (Tech.) Engineering Technology - Pilani
- MSc (Tech.) General Studies - Pilani
- Higher preference for MSc courses (call it as B-group courses) of pilani because student X BITSAT score falls into that category exactly. Also getting a dual degree in few of the disciplines like Computer science , EEE or E&I is not difficult if you score good marks (we call it as CGPA - Cumulative Grade Point Average in BITS) in exams. In fact the marks (latest marks I could get) required to get dual degrees are:
- EEE - 7.5+
- Computer Science - 7.6+
- E&I - 7.2+
- Mechanical - 7+
- EEE - 7.5+
- These scores are applicable to students of B-group only. If a student wants to take dual within A-group (the B.E (Hons.) courses) then the scores can go as high as 9.2+. Likewise if a student wants to take a transfer to another A-group course, the score required is high (around 9.3+). Thus getting a dual degree using B-group is easier compared to other available options. An average student who studies regularly can easily get above 8.5 in BITS, atleast in first year as few of the subjects are foundation subjects. The only drawback is he needs to spend 5 years to complete the courses instead of 4 years. But I never consider this as a drawback because a dual degree student has the option to take internship of either 6 months (1 semester) or 12 months (2 semester). These internship are done in reputed organisations and many of them even get employed in those companies !! Thus effectively you are actually studying for 4 years + 1 year of real project work in various companies. Not a bad deal !!
- Hyderabad though a new college can have an edge over Goa in terms of placement and other resources because of its geographic location. There have also been rumours that hyderabad campus will have world class faculty.
"As explained earlier, a candidate who has appeared in BITSAT-2008 will be eligible for admission only if he/she gets the required minimum marks in the Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or Biology subjects of 12th examination as per the eligibility criteria described already. All candidates who have appeared in BITSAT-2008 and are interested in admission will be required to submit Admission application with 12th marks and preferences to different degree programmes offered, on or before 30th June 2008, as detailed later in this brochure.
The merit position of such eligible candidates (i.e., those who have appeared in BITSAT-2008 and have submitted the application for admission in the prescribed form(s) with 12th marks, preferences and the required fees) will be prepared on the basis of their scores in BITSAT-2008. There will be two separate merit lists prepared for admission. One for all the programmes except the B.Pharm.(Hons.) and M.Sc.(Hons.) Biological Sciences, the other only for B.Pharm.(Hons.) and M.Sc.(Hons.) Biological Sciences. The cases of bracketing, if any, will be dealt with as described below.
When the score of two candidates are the same, first their scores obtained in Mathematics (if he/she has taken Mathematics in BITSAT) or Biology (if he/she has taken Biology in BITSAT) will be considered for separating them. If the scores obtained in Mathematics/Biology are equal, then their scores in Physics in BITSAT will be considered for separating them. If the scores obtained in Physics are also equal, then their scores in Chemistry in BITSAT will be considered for separating them. If still there is a tie, their PCM (if he/she has taken Mathematics in BITSAT) or PCB (if he/she has taken Biology in BITSAT) total marks in 12th examination will be considered for their separation."

Hi,
I got around 320 marks in BITSAT-08. I am very much interested in Computer Science. Based on the preferences given by you, i think mathematics or economics will be good. what do you suggest? Will i get these branches in pilani?
Saket
Hi saket,
You have very good chances of getting Maths or Economics :). If you are very much interested in computer science, then you can also give a try for computer science hyderabad. Maths/Economics + Computer Science is one of the popular duals at BITS-Pilani and companies do prefer such students. :)
Gud post deepak..i guess rather than the post the comments section shud be more useful..make it more lively...
Yes surely...i have requested the students to post their queries here instead of mailing it to me as this will help other students also in clearing their doubts.
great work Deepak..I do appreciate the work n interest shown by u for the freshers to BITS...!!
Great work Deepak., I would have loved if you had given higher preference to EEE . Anyway this question is always debated one which one is better in BITS EEE or CS but anyway great infor should help fresher lot,
Alok
Hi Alok,
As i said in the post, give first preference always to u r interests...then the other options can be adjusted.
Hi deepak,
My son secured 293 marks in BITSAT, i have gone through your post and it has cleared many of my doubts. Thank you for that. I had a doubt regarding few of the streams like MSc(Tech.) Finance and also Engineering Technology. The preference was given quite low in your list. why is that so?
hi, deepak .what a great work.does B.E (Hons) means B.E +M.SC??. i am confused in this aspect.i am from Hyd .so do you advice me to give Hyd preference so that i can get my first preferences (as my score is 308).based on your post can i give preference to GOA over HYD..
@Anonymous,
sir, MSc(Tech.) Finance is good but its not a kind of course which is easily recognised among the companies. Same is the case with Engineering technology..All the students of these disciplines get placed in good companies though.
Hi vardhan,
B.E (Hons.) is an engineering course similar to B.Tech in AP. The dual degree course is referred as MSc (Hons.) & B.E(Hons.). As i told in the post, Hyderabad has an edge over other campuses due to its geographic location..but since your score is 308, i think you stand a fair chance to get into one of the MSc courses in Pilani itself.
Hi deepak,
Your post was very much informative. Thanks a lot!! Do BITS have any reservation quota or management seats?
Pavan
Hi Deepak,
I got 263 marks in BITSAT. I am little worried as i did not do my other exams well. Based on the approximate cut-offs given by you, i am doubtful if i will get any seat in BITS. How good are my chances to get a seat atleast in BITS-Hyderabad?
Ravi Chandran
hi deepak .thank you very much 4 clearing my doubts .. i think the cut offs would go down by 8-15 marks..the CGPA concept is slightly confusing ..hope iwill understand stand it once i get into BITS
hello deepak,
I had a doubt regarding transfer option. Suppose i am in civil and i want to get transfer to instrumentation then will there is any course structure change for me after i take the transfer?
1) There is no such thing as reservation in BITS-Pilani. Regarding management quota, very few seats may be around 15(in pilani) are available only to children of faculty in BITS.
2) Hi ravi chandran you have very gud chances of getting admit in BITS,last year a student who secured 260 got an admit. Dont say atleast hyd, my guess is hyd wud be prefered to goa by many students. Give ur preferences as if u have to rate the courses based on ur interests, lets hope for the best.
3)Regarding Transfer option...
first thing u need to know is all the students who got admit in BITS will have the same course structure for the first year(even gud number of courses in second year and very few in third yr)...irrespective of their branch(its cald as 'Discipline' in BITS) so no need to worry abt course structure.
and for a civil guy to get a transfer to instrumentation he shud have his CGPA above 9 (min) and it depends on competition.. below 9 transfers are rare.. Computer science and EEE may require 9.8 approx sometimes
hope this clears few of ur doubts in the initial stages..
warm regards,
Vedi
hello sir,
My name is shashank and i scored 274 in BITSAT. I am very much interested to do dual degree. I have read the post and it has cleared lot of my doubts. Thank you. Do we have any provision for scholarships?
Hi shashank,
You will entitled to a merit-cum-need scholarship depending on ur performance..
if u maintain cgpa of 10/10 entire tution amount for tat semester will be given as scholarship, half the tution fee if ur above 9 etc (note sure of current details)..
every sem scholarship is based on ur performance of tat sem.
The govt of AP used to give pratibha scholarship, currently i guess its not giving.
hello sir,
Your post has been immensely useful for students like us. I wanted to know more about extra curricular activities at BITS. I heard that BITS has lots of extracurricular activities to take part. can u please let me know more about it?
Rahish
hi, vardhan here . as my score is 308 i have decided to chooseCS out of my options my friends said that if you choose courses which are beyond your marks then you will be placed in the merit list . Is that true??? i want to do EEE (OR)E&I atleast in hyd.. i am oscillatinng between gao & hyd which to chose as my first option.. deepak said that hyd should be given preference so i have desided togo with hyd .. based on this will i get EEE (OR) E& I in hyd without being placed in the waiting list ..
@rahish, BITS is full of extra curricular activities..if fact one of the very foundations of BITS education system lies in the fact that students are involved in various other activities. All the cultural, sports and science festivals are entirely organised by students. Mess and hostels are also taken care by the students. you are also involved in few of the administrative tasks of BITS. All these give you experience in varied fields. You have a special orientation session on various extra curricular activities in BITS during the BITS orientation session at the time of admissions.
hi vardhan,
I dont understand what you mean by merit list, but yes there is something called sliding process in which if there are any vacant seats in any stream and if any student has given it a suitable preference then he will be automatically slided to the new stream. This process is very well explain in BITS admission site. EEE and E&I have almost the same courses except around 3 courses in third year. so these two streams are almost the same. you can reduce the gap further more by chosing your electives (subjects of u r interests) wisely.
guys...I have received some queries thru mail few of which i posting here. This will benefit other students who have similar queries.
Ishani:
I scored 255 in BITSAT 2008. Do you think I can make it to the merit list? If not the B.E. courses, the M.Sc ones?
AIEEE went terribly.. I still might be managing to get into a Private college in Bengal. Besides, WBJEE results are yet to be declared.
Do you suggest I should go for engineering in a private college, or pursue a M. Sc in BITS/B. Sc in pure sciences? I am sure I'll get into one of the good colleges in Kolkata for the B. Sc courses, as my 12th Results are good.
Venkateswaran:
My Son Mahesh has got 276 in BITSAT and in AIEEE Karnataka rank 159 (AIR 7314). I am little confused about whether he should choose NIT, Surathkal or he should try any course in BITS, including M.Sc. I seek your advice. Thanks in advance.
Chandra:
i got 250 marks in bitsat 2008 can i expect civil in hyderabad campus
@Ishani,
to be frank, your score lies near the cut-offs...but still there are good chances of making into BITS. BITS is definitely worthy than many colleges (private ones , NITS, few IITS) for engineering. You can pursue MSc in BITS and simulataneously take another Degree like computer science, EEE etc. This is one of the unique flexibitlities offered at BITS..As long as u r planning to go for higher education after u r graduation..BSc is ok..but i advise you to keep BSc as a last resort..meanwhile keep u r fingers crossed for BITS and also look out for good private and national colleges in bengal.
@vekateswaran,
sir,
BITS is better than almost all the NITS...i have few frens in NITS and i can assure you that the quality of education at BITS is very good. Also engineering is after all not only about studies but also abt overall personality developement that enables us to boldly face any hurdles in life.
276 is a good score and i expect that he would get one of the better MSc courses..
karnataka 159 rank is no doubt very good but i dun have much idea as what kind of seat he might get..I suggest you to ask u r son's interests before deciding on the stream.
@Chandra,
you have fair chances of getting civil in hyderabad.
Ohh Com'on Deepak,
Well it's a known fact that EEE at BITS-Pilani is far more better than CS there. Then did you choose CS over EEE in terms of priority. Well my message to the readers of this blog, go with EEE, if you can get it.
BITS has got a very good faculty for Electronics. We have a dedicated VLSI lab which was funded by alumni members. The students of electronics stream are very well placed. Even CS has its own set of labs and has very good placement record. ppl shud give more preference to the stream in which they are interested to wrk.
Hi Deepak! Let me congratulate you on the excellent stuff you have put in the article. I am a little apprehensive about the placements in Goa and the commencing Hyderabd branches of BITS. What would be the avg package that one can expect if he is passing out of these 2 campuses say around 2012-13.
hi,
Its a difficult question to answer even if you had asked abt pilani itself, coz the pay is decided by the companies based on the market conditions and demand for engineers. But I can assure you that the avg pay of any of the BITS campuses will be on par with well established colleges of india. Pilani will still have an edge over other BITS campuses..Hyderabad might also get better placements.
i wanted to ask if :
>i get b-tech mech. in goa should i opt for that or eee, ec in nit allhabad, or other nits.wanted to know ur opnion. thanx
Deepak great work done. Indeed very useful. My score is 289. What are my chances in % terms of getting into BITS - any campus - any branch except M.Sc (Tech)other than Infosys.
2. This year the online format is different from last years. There are two forms - FES for Engg courses and FBS for Bio courses. We can fill both but give preference first to Form and then to courses. Thus if I give first preference to FES form, I have to indicate my all options for the courses there and FBS forms will follow only after that. Thus we cannot keep M.Sc Bio above Engg Service or Finance or Gen Studies. What to do ?
2. If I get Engg Service, Finance or GEN Studies in BITS and a BE course in NIT - what should I prefer ?
hi deepak..i scored around 240 in bits.can i expect any course in any of the three?
For question regd. BE Mech in BITS-Goa or EEE,ECE in NIT allahabad.
Hi, indeed it will be tricky to choose between these two. i dont have much knowledge abt NIT allahabad..but i can give you some guidelines based on which you can evaluate urself :)
rate the colleges based on these factors:
1. Course curricula
2. College popularity
2. Placement scenario
3. Alumni contacts
4. Higher studies prospects
I can give the inputs abt BITS-Goa:
course curricula is same as pilani and the courses are very good. Placement scenario is satisfactory but considering that last year was the first placement season for GOA, it did pretty well. Alumni contacts...man..other colleges envy us for the kinda alumni contacts we maintain!! Irrespective of the location you still come under one big family called "BITS". Higher studies prospects are "very very" good. Consider this, many students from BITS have got admits in stanford, Michigan, LBS, Cambridge, Berkeley etc. in management and engineering fields. The alumni base spread over many countries help us in our higher education.
hi prerna,
For the first question,
Your score of 289 is very good, you will get any of the MSc courses (excluding MSc Biology) available. You might also get few of the BE courses like chemical or civil. You may not go upto Engineering Technology, Finance and General studies unless you have given them higher preference than others :). One thing is for sure tht you wont keep FBS before FES hence the only other option you have is give FES preferences first then put in FBS. I suggest you to give last preferences for those 3 MSc(Tech.) courses.
For second question,
If at all you make it into those 3 MSc Tech courses, then BE courses from NIT will be a better option.
Hope it clears your doubt. Shoot in u r queries incase its not clear :)
score 240 is little low to be frank. Keep your fingers crossed is all what i can say to you !! But meanwhile i suggest you to look out for other colleges in you state/city based on u r ranks in various entrance exams. You can also try for various NITS and few other reputed colleges from different states.
vardhan sorry ,deepak ..in my earlier postit is not ''merit list'' but ''waiting list''. i could clear my doubt.. i understood that -suppose if you get a m.sc couse in some branch say in maths. at the end of first year based on your CGPA you can getsome other branch say in EEE ,do you still have persue m.sc in maths or can u opt out of it ..also a student persuing b.e in mechanical can go to m.tech in EEE ( I read in some website) but there is no such thing in application form ..does this come after 1st year [ based on CGPA]..
thanks a lot. i will definitely give first preference to FES bt in that i will not opt for M.Sc - Engg Ser, Finance and Gen Studies. After that I will fill up FEB form. One thing please help. Write about Hyd campus. I am very much interested in computers. So should i give Hyd - cs, eee, eni, infosys before Civil, chemical in Goa and Pilani. do u know about the present status of Hyd campus - infrastructure-hostels, classrooms, sports facilities, labs etc. Some say that for few months or may be a year, they will arrange some accommodation outside the campus and even classes from some makeshift arrangement. Do you have any definite info on that.
Hi vardhan,
If you want to switch completely to BE degree from MSc degree..say u got MSc maths in first year..based on u r performance u were able to get Computer Science as dual. At this point you can either opt for dual degree or transfer from MSc maths to BE computer science. But the transfer from MSc to BE or for that matter any transfers in BITS requires high scores say around 92% plus. U cannot directly do ME-EEE(BITS does not have MTech) from BE-Mech. You can score high and take a transfer from BE-Mech to BE-EEE and then at the end of second year or beginning of third year, you can opt from ME integrated or BE + ME in EEE. Hope this clears your doubt
BITS has always been a dream destination for students from south india especially AP. Hence even the govt. of AP is active in allocating all the necessary resources for completion of BITS-Hyd. The work is in full swing and i feel it shudn take much time before the campus is up and rocking ! Temporary arrangements might be there for sometime though. few notable features about new colleges (the ones coming from the established brands) is lower cut-offs for better disciplines, first hand experience in helping the college to settle down and also be the first ones to start new and fundoo activities..say clubs, departments,
associations, festivals etc. These help the students to mould themselves into not only pure technical engineers but but also gain some management insight ! :). I shall try n get some more info abt the Hyd campus progress.
One of the query which i received is worth mentioning here:
My son score is 253 in BITSAT.Still he is complaining that 4-5 questions were wrong.I want to ask if BITS authority establishes that questions were wrong then how much marks they will give. Only 1 marks or 3 marks per wrong question or some weighted percentage. My son is intelligent but lack in labour. On 13th april while writing IIT,when he counted that he scored 225, he became happy and then attempted all black box type questions which resulted in 68 negative marks. So he did not qualify and screwed all the subsequent exams. Anyway,As a father I can motivate him only.He is desparate to join BITS any campous any course except pharma/biological course. What is his chance. Can dual will be confirmed to BE. Please use all your good experiences to answer my question truely and near to hard reality for which I shall be ever grateful to you.
sir,
Regd. error in BITSAT questions, you can look in the bits admission website if they have any provision for such issues. Else if u r son is confident tht those questions were wrong, you can call the admission office and ask about it. 253 score to be frank is near border..and if those 3 to 4 questions were definitely wrong then the compensated score can greatly improve the chances of getting admission into BITS.
Another good question,
I'm interested only in core sectors like civil..chemical...mechanical
And one more thing .....im interested only in BE(HONS)
Though i have given MSc in my 14 branch options but im seeking only for chemical engineering as im very much interested in it.Pls tell me about my chances at the pilani campus.
Thanks for ur last suggestion.....i went thru ur blog and found that even MSc is a good option
Also i wanted to ask u that if i do Chemical eng. at any campus.... will I be able to upgrade to mechanical or electrical after getting a good CGPA
If you have interest in specific fields like chemical, petroleum, civil etc. i strongly advise you to go for it. Chemical have good placements to the likes of BPCL,IOCL,Bharat Oman refineries Limited, Schlumberger and others. These are core sector companies. Civil though doesn't attract much core companies but i have few friends who got placed in Unitech,DLF,Sobha etc.
These disciplines students no doubt will also get placed in the IT service companies and also get chances of getting placed in business analyst roles and consulting positions.
sir..i am from delhi
can u give me the order of preference for any branch out of the following
BITS-pilani
BITS-goa
BITS-hyderabad
DCE(delhi college of engineering)
hi,
Order of preference should be based on branch and not on college. Assuming you are getting the same stream in all the colleges..i think you can give preference as BITS-Pilani, DCE, BITS-GOA, BITS-Hyd.
it cleared my doubts,, thank you very much.. every day new and new doubts are getting in my mind 1)what is the difference between M.Sc (Tech) AND M.Sc (HONS) 2) a student getting into m.sc (hons) gets a B.E .. Then what does a student getting into m.sc(tech) gets??? 3)what does m.sc(tech )in information systems and that in engg.technology deals with ??
Well written Roomie. I do agree with your views.
ppl if u really wish to know about the differences btn various streams, just go thru the BITS bulletin and loook at the courses. most of the course names are self explanatory.
After doing so if u are still confused pester this epitome of patience ;)
MSc (Hons.) are the honourary science courses..MSc Tech. are developed for understanding of the new generation technology. more info abt them can be had from BITS bulletin and BITS admission website. Few of the MSc(Tech.) courses were started as per industry needs. MSc (Tech.) Information systems is one such example. Engineering technology deals with engineering on broader level where u get a chance to study few selected courses from various other disciplines. MSc Tech. students have the option to take dual within MSc Tech. group and nothing else. Generally ppl from Engineering technology, finance and general studies take dual with information systems. The percentage required for it is little high (around 90%). Starting from year 2006 BITS has introduced a system where C-group students can opt for dual in other group courses under certain conditions. Check BITS bulletin for more info.
Hai 311 chances of cse at hyd bits
Computer Science discipline is quite popular and will attract high score students. You may not be able to get CSE but alternatively u can try for dual degree. Since your score is good you can try for Maths and then take dual with computer science later.
Hai Deepak,
Great site for Bits aspirants.Congratulations to U.my bitsat score is 311. I have claimed one question in maths during online exam.Score not yet been updated. What to do. Being at Nagpur can I prefer Hyd after Pilani. My interest is with CSE. My likely pref. will be .1.CSE 2.EEE.3EI4MECH(piLANI).5.CSE(GOA).6.CSE,7.ECE(HYD).8.EEE(GOA),9.EEE(HYD),10,E&i (GOA).MECH(GOA),12MECH(HYD).WHAT r my chances in no.4-5-6-7-8).Not intersted to take risk in dual.guide me further.correct me if I am wrong.
regards
Hi raja,
I can say that you have fair amount of chances getting into those disciplines which you have mentioned. Computer science might little doubtful though..Mech has good chances..DUAL is not a risky option, i can assure you..an average student with regular prepartion can score very good at BITS, hence getting a dual shud not be a problem.
Hi Deepak,
Thanks for the prompt and tangible reply.Incase I am offered 8th option (EEE at Goa) on 1 july and taken the admission. What r my chances of getting my options 7-6-5-4 over the waitlisted people after V/VI iterations. Also clear my other doubt.Suppose after my III iteration I am offered option 6th and accepted, further got option 5th after II iteration, which at that stage if I am not interested to accept, Can I be allowed to keep the option 5 as final. If so, can I still be allowed to be in the race for option 4 or there ends the matter. My Query my be slightly ambiquous but ur answer would be really beneficial not only to me but for many.
regards
Hi Raja,
chances of getting slided after u r admission to EEE depends upon the admission of various other institutes say IITs and NITS. This is because the students who got good ranks in various other collges will opt the better among those. If their admission process is already done then you may have very bleak chances of any sliding. But if their admissions are not done then there will some sliding process. Also since new IITs are adding 700 seats, there is bound to be some sliding till everything settles around. I dont think you have an option to choose if during sliding process you are moved to another branch. It is based on preference order given by you and that preference order is final. Please check BITS website if there are any such options.
hi this is naresh.my score is 265
can i get msc(economics) in any the three campuses?
at what date will the last counselling be completed?
i hope that you will sent the contact number of a person from vijayawada as requested in the email sent to u.please reply as soon as you can.
thanks fr ur exellent service.
hi deepak!!
u are doing really a wonderful job in clarifying d doubts regarding bits..
my son has scored 240 in bits.is there any chance in getting admission in any of the courses...
sir,
240 marks are little less as the cut can be somewhere around 250s. Predications are always not correct :). keep your fingers crossed and wait n watch is all what i can say. Meanwhile i advise you to look for other colleges in local and also if u r son has scored good marks in other national level entrance exams, you can try for other reputed colleges.

i think you have missed my comment.
day after tommorrow i am going for another deemed university(amrita-coimbatore)to pay full fee as i got cse there.if you give me the answer to my above comment i can request the university authorities for seat cancellation or final date extension.
"Amrita college is considered to be one of the better colleges in tamil nadu. Ranked consistently among top 10 of TN, it boasts of good infrastructure, faculty and placements. The quality of students if good. Computer science department of this college is considered to be very good followed by electronics." - This info is from one of my colleagues who is from TN. I am not sure what kind of seat you might get in BITS based on you score. The least cut-off in MSc courses last year was around 280. I suggest you to ask for some extension period from that college. make sure you get enuf extension time so that you come to know about bits results also.
I got 369 in BITSAT-08. Do I have good chances of getting Computer scince at BITS-Pilani. In addition to PCM, is it compulsory to have 80% in English (CBSE 12th) as well to be eligible for admission at BITS.
First of all let me congratulate you in getting good score! you stand a definite chance for top 3 disciplines. Based on last year cut-offs, i am quite sure that you will get computer science in pilani ..regd. the percentage requirements in english, please check the BITS website..if you dont find any info then do let me know.
Hi deepak thanx for your reply. I have searched all sites related to BITS. In the eligibility criteria they mention 80% aggregate in PCM with at least 60% in individual subjects which I have got. They also write 'adequate proficiency in English but no mention of percentage. I have 78% in English and therfore worried. Pl. clarify.
unless they dont mention any cut-off percentage for English, it is safe to assume they did not keep any cut-offs. Last year there wasnt any cut-off percent for english. I guess by tht statement they want to make sure that students who get admitted to courses should have decent command over english.
hi brother sorry for asking this question repeatedly, but iam in extreme need forthe answer so that ican fix my extension dates and to try for other institutions.
when can be the approximate date for the lastcounselling be completed for bits?
also is msc(biology) a difficult course for M.P.C students?
also is it good to take that course?
Hi,
I cant tell you the fixed dates but suppose june 30 is deadline for preferences then the first list comes in july first week..u need to pay the fees if u wanna join..then after the fees deadline lapses (around july 2nd week) second list comes..and then after registration (around july last week to august first week) the third list comes. Exact dates is difficult to get. Second one is generally considered final as there will be very little change in the third list.
I hav read somewhere in BITS Forum that Msc (Phy)is a tough one compared to other MSc's ie Maths chemistry etc. Kindly clarify and elobarate about this perception
Siddhant
i got 304 in bitsat 2008. can i get cse in hyd??when do u opt for dual degrees?is it after the end of the first yr? wat do is most gettable branch in hyd?
MSc Physics is relatively tough but dual with EEE or E&I makes it an attractive combination. Though it is little tough, the professors make sure that you sail smoothly thru the courses.
You choose the dual degree option at the end of first year and the results would be known during summer vacations. You have bright chances to get MSc in pilani itself. I suggest you to try pilani and then look for other BITS brances.
Hi Deepak,
thanks for the reply.I am the same Raja.I could not send the comments through my user name.It says password is incorrect. How to resolve I dont know.Anyway.I am interested to know the tentative cut off for all the branches (A group) in all three campuses taking into consideration of all factore (new iits , new bit etc).I am interested to choose Bits hyd after bits pilani campus.Pl.suggest.Score as U know it is 311.When Bits people give other statistics like number of students scored above 300 etc. Also enlightened me if I am alloted seat in Goa after 4 iteration and joined. Can I be allowed to shift the campus If I get Pilani in V iteration.Kudos to U for your deligent and pragmatic reply.Fantastic....
regards
Hi Deepak,
One important thing I want to know is the cut off score 2007 given in bits web and ofcourse in ur blog was the one after the final iteration of 2007 or after Ist iteration.Pl.clear my doubt. Thanks
Hi Raja,
Tentative cut-offs are difficult to predict but if you wanna give a try, i think you can cut 5 to 10 marks from the cut-offs for various disciplines of last year. The cut-offs for top 3 to 4 disciplines might not change. Cut-offs and stats are given by bits admin only after the admission and sliding process is completed. If during sliding process you get a stream and for that you need move to other campus then you will asked to go to the respective campus.
Thanks for ur nice reply. From that I safely presume that cut off of Hyd.will be around 35-40 marks? less than Pilani campus of the respective branch.Am I right. It is just a rough calculation.U may be a better person predict the score in a precise way.Anyway ur answer is tangible and clear almost all my doubts.Thank U.Pl. tell me between Goa and Hyd. which one has to choose first of the same branch, consider food and location, accessibility and future growth prospects.I am from Nagpur.PILANI campus is 'undoubtly my first choice.
Thanks.
is ismu dhanbad better than bits??
Hi Deepak, I have really forgotten u r from Hy'bad.Please.visit the Bit pilani, Hyd campus and give ur first hand report on all aspects for the benefit of bits aspirants.I hope u r in Hyd at present.
regards.
RAJA
Hi raja,
Around 15-20 marks for MSc, 20-30 for MSc (Tech.) and 0 to 20 marks for BE degrees if you want me to guess. Goa has the advantage of experience, future growth, accessibility. Hyd is a new entrant but can have good prospects in placements, future growth..If i need to choose i go by gut feeling n choose hyderabad..also hyderabad is my native place :)
I work in bangalore and goto hyderabad very frequently. But I may not have time to visit hyd campus. I shall try though.
AFAIK dhanbad institute has courses dealing with mines and mining industry. Unless student has prior knowledge and interest in this field, they should better opt for other popular courses. I would rather prefer BITS in this case.
Thanks for all the replies.Nice, prompt with clinical precision. U R Gr8.
regards.
hi,
please tell me about msc(biology).can we do dual with it? msc(economics),msc(biology)which one is good to take?
should we know basics about biology to take msc(biology)
you dont need to have any basics of biology for MSc Bio though having it will be an advantage. BITS will teach you all the required foundation courses for Bio . One can choose between bio and economics depending upon his interest. But since majority of engineering aspirants are the ones who have maths, physics and chemsitry as +2 courses, they generally wont like Bio courses. You can take any dual degree with MSc Biology. I have few frens who have MSc Bio with other engineering degrees dual like instrumentation, EEE, chemical etc.
brother i thought msc(biology)is different from engineering stream,so while filling FES(all degree programmes except B.pharm.hons and msc.hons.biological sciences)and FPB(B.pharm.hons and msc.hons.bioogical) forms i opted for FES.he clearly mentioned,if once we opt for one and confirm it cannot be changed.he gave an option to fill both FES and FPB forms but due to ignorance i filled only FES.my score is 265 so i cannot expect other msc courses except biology as its last year cut off is just 271.is there any way to rectify this by contacting authorities.
is it better to take cse in amrita-coimbatore or msc(biology)in bits.however i have some interest on the institute bits.i am naresh ,last time my brother nagarjuna gave comment.plz give me suggestions
HI Deepak
I have got 306 in Bitsat 2008.
Do you think i will get EEE at Bits Goa ?
My next option is Goa mech. If not EEE then Will i get Mech ?
By the way u have put together a great site. Plz reply. Thanks !
hi naresh i dont think u can fill FPB now.. but for 265 u can expect a dual degree may be in goa or hyd.
and i suggest u to join BITS though its a dual degree...let me tell u few things here.. one of my frnd and batchmate, a Bpharm ite did take electives of Computer Science and stood as topper in most of the courses and he is well placed in a gud start up firm with gud package..similarly another frnd in engineering technology did the same.. so u have lot of flexibility in BITS tat allows you to take courses of ur choice ofcourse few limitations are there but minute..
Hi Adwait for 306 i think u might get mech in Goa not sure though.. i dont think u will get EEE in Goa.. if u really want to pursue EEE or for tat matter even Mech, u can do tat by taking up dual..so u fill ur preferences based on ur interests..its gud if u get them otherwise also tension kyun dual hai naa...
hi deepak,i got 341 in bitsat, wat shud my preferences be,im frm ap,my preferences are cs pilani and next cs hyderabad,is it ok,im more interested in computer science
Hi Sir,
I have 292 marks in BITSAT 2008,
I am not intersted in M.Sc & B.E.(only Civil rest will do) Courses.
So, please give me the preference order for the admission form.
I have 16727 AIR in AIEEE 2008, what do you suggest for this rank???
Please respond soon!!!
Thanks
Rohit (Indore)
Hi tharun , for 341 i guess u will get csc in hyd..since ur interested in csc go fr it, pilani first , hyd second and goa third .. gud thinking..
hi rohit i guess u will get civil in BITS hyd.. civil is not there in BITS goa..and civil in pilani u might not get.. i am not the right person to suggest abt AIEEE but a rank of 16000 might not give u gud options than bits.. u can even go for a dual and do civil in bits pilani..brand name fetches u a lot in branches like civil..give it a thought the kind of faculty in BITS , u will not get any where except in IITS (few)
hi,
i got 288 in bitsat08. can i get
msc phy/maths dual at pilani???
do i hav any chance of 4 yr be at
pilani campus??
in which councelling do they give
updated scores(increasd if applicable) ???
hi deepak,
my bitsat score is 277 and aieee rank is 11,221.wat r my chances of gettin in pilani campus.i put goa before hyd in my preferences.
Hello Brother,
I am Ashish, scored only 253. Now Bitsat is over and U must have consolidated yr cut-off calculations. kindly tell me about my chance for duals anywhere. Also I am a repeater,is it prudent to join dual and consume another 5 years just to get a basic dual BE degree?
Hi atul, u have fair chance but not sure about pilani. Can you elaborate more abt updates scores etc, i didnt get u.
hi shailen, U will get an admit in pilani campus, but which branch r u asking about?
Hi ashish, i can only say u have chance to get dual may be in goa or hyd and also assuming tat u filled both FES and FPB.. see dual degree is for 5 yrs agreed but dont think its a waste of one yr.. coz most of the dual degree people will do internship(gud stipend too) in their final yr(through out the year), u will get gud corporate exp and u study only one sem extra on campus compared to people who are doing a 4 yr course.. so dont discount the dual option thinking its a 5 yr course and ur a repeater. All teh best.
Hai Deepak good morning,
Yah, Still not filling the online form.confused between choosing goa and hyd.Still give an edge to hyd. What would be the cut off mark difference between the CSE of goa and Hyd. It is about 30 marks between pilani and goa last year for 2007 CSE.Can we expect similar gap between Goa and hyd this year.please clarify.
regards
raja
whats the expected cutoff of
msc dual phy at pilani campus????
Y silence Deepak,
say some thing.Perhaps calculating the cutoffs. When bits web publish the statistics about marks scored by aspirants.Any rumours about this year students performance as compared previous year.Give ur research.I am really impressed about ur blog.
Thanks RAJA
Hi Praja,
I dont think similar gap of 30 marks wud exist this time, the number of people giving BITSAT and teh number of people who got scores above 350 are more this yr.Also hyd is sort after by many students than goa this time, coz the placements will be better since hyd is an emerging city for many corporations to set up their offices, second its in a city, life will be better and third many people from hyd and close to hyd opt for hyd..close to parents etc
BITS will publish only after the admissions i guess, or atleast only after june 30th ( not sure though)..
Its not easy to arrive at cutoffs especially when a new campus is setup in a place like hyd..overall all the cutoffs(except for EEE,CSc,ECE,E&I) will be lowered by 5- 10 marks.
This shud answer Atul's question too..
hi vedi,
thanks for replying to my question.im open to any branch in pilani.pls tell wat branch can i expect in pilani.r u sure that i will get in pilani.
waiting for reply.
im sorry i forgot to ask u whether i should prefer MSc.economics to MSc.info systems or vice-versa.
Hi Shailen,
In pilani u might get Msc.Bio(assuming u filled both fes and fpb), seeing the last yr cutoffs.. but as i see many people opting for hyd this time, u have a chance to get other dual degrees as well, MSC. Info Sys is gud degree which is sort after by many after the eee,cs,e&I,ECE ..so u might not get it for ur score..so its better to wait until u got admit and let me know what u got..i can sugest u more interms of how to go abt it...etc..
hi vedi,
thanks for ur reply.but i filled only FES & not FPB.can i expect the duals in pilani.if not pilani atleast in goa.In my preferences i gave B.E PILANI,MSc.PILANI,B.E GOA,MSc.GOA & then hyd in the similar way.
whats better option???
msc phy dual@pilani campus
btech-eee/mech/ece@nit
(warangal/trichy/suratkal)
hi sir,
i got 324 in bitsat. do u think i will be able to get mech at pilani.
@shailen, You have very bright chances of getting dual in one of the campuses. The chances to get in pilani are little less though.
@Atul, Well if you are looking purely from academics point of view then they might stand at the same place but engineering life is one of the most important stages of your life By selecting proper college you will learn about many other things like teamwork, planning, preparation, friends, multitasking etc., apart from the regular academics. I have said that getting a dual degree is not very tough, this does not mean that it will be a cakewalk. You need to score the minumum cut-off grades to get u r desired dual. Thus this aspect adds a little bit of uncertainity to dual. i would prefer to choose BITS over NITs.
@kunal, You have fair degree of chances of getting mech in pilani.
Hai, Good morning
every morning when I try to post a comment It give me wrong pass word.I have to open new google ac.How to solve this problem.I love to post my comment every day but it gives me a problem. Please solve this too if possible
By the by, For 311 in bitsat. What Can I expect in the first list.A group is my first choise.Pilani. (top 4), Hyd (top 4)followed by Goa (top 4).Please give me an idea.
Ur replies are crystal clear and very beneficial to the readers. Also ur rating between civil and chemical considering the demand and offer.
Thanks.
Raja
Hi Deepak/Vedi,
I am on line. Can I have ur reply please. Also Tell me Out of Ece-eee & mech in Hyd.Is there any chance of getting one of the three in the first list on july first for the bitsat 311 marks. Also Mr.Deepak mentioned that number of people scored above 350 is more this time. How much this will change/compensate the cut off considering other factors like new bits, new iits etc.Pl.enlighten me.May be U have given some idea about cut off earlier too.Hoping U might have got some more new informations by now. I a tempted to ask again.
regards
Raja
311 will not fetch you any of the top 4-5 branches in the first iteration. chemical and civil has good demand..
with govt giving high importance to infrastructure and allowing FDI in realty and infrastructure areas, it has opened up a huge number of opportunities for civil engineers. With growing demand for oil, major thrust on green initiatives and also opportunities in regular chemical industries, chemical engineering has been considered one of the evergreen engineering branches like mechanical. These engineers can also become consultants in their areas of expertise.
Hi,Thank U.I have to apply today. My confusion is whether to give civil just ahead of chemical. As per my inner consience I just drafted a list.I would rather happy if I get any one of the A group in 1st iteration in any one of the campus. Here is my pref.in the A group.U can go through, correct and guide me.
1. B.E (Hons.) Computer Science - Pilani
2. B.E (Hons.) EEE - Pilani
3. B.E (Hons.) E&I - Pilani
4. B.E (Hons.) Mechanical - Pilani
5. B.E (Hons.) Computer Science - Hyderabad
6. B.E (Hons.) Computer Science - Goa
7. B.E (Hons.) ECE - Hyderabad
8. B.E (Hons.) EEE - Hyderabad
9. B.E (Hons.) EEE - Goa
10. B.E (Hons.) E&I - Goa
11. B.E (Hons.) Mechanical - Hyderabad
12. B.E (Hons.) Mechanical - Goa
13. B.E (Hons.) Civil – Pilani
14. B.E (Hons.) Chemical - Pilani
15. B.E (Hons.) Civil - Hyderabad
16. B.E (Hons.) Chemical - Hyderabad
17. B.E (Hons.) Chemical - Goa
Thank U,
Regards,
RAJA
Hi Raja,
U can expect mechanical in goa and also in hyd.
I do understand ur eagerness to know all such info..but let me tell u,we dont have ne clue of such data, we can share our experience but tough to predict the cutoffs. All u can do is put preferences according to ur interests and wait for the day..
If u still want to know something in particular, put it across we shall answer it..but pls understand we cant generalize things and predict cutoffs..it will only mislead other aspirants who are following this blog..
To be frank, my gut feel says for 311 its not easy to get EEE,CSC,ECE and E&I in any campus, but sometimes lady luck might favor u..
Keep u r options open..stay relaxed, u r going to study in BITS and u have a bright future ahead (irrespective of branch)..
thanx for the reply, you are doing a great job ,highly commendable.
Gr8 work deepak...well actually I wanted 2 ask u this...i heard from a student willing to join BITS that BITS-Pilani is gonna shift its main campus as in to HYD and not at Pilani...this did freak me out..but plz can u temme if u know any thing abt it...
For sure shifting of main campus to other place is not going to take place. with more than 50 years of experience at Pilani the idea doesn even luk attractive to shift the campus. The world knows BITS as BITS-Pilani :). Faculty transfers are a part of such expansion plans. Experienced faculty has the choice to go to new campus so that they can benefit the campus from their experience in academic as well as administrative activities. BITS-Hyd will have world class faculty.
MY son has got 295 and he is interested in cs or mechanical. Any chance in any of the campuses. He has aieee rank of 8843. Do BITs release the statistics/frequency distribution?

Hi
i have scored 258 in bitsat 2008. is there any chance of getting a seat in a any bits? please clarify about second and third counselling cutoffs.
what is the difference between msc(hons)and msc(tech)?can we do dual with msc(tech)?
hi sir,
i would like to know abt. course structure(which i can understand) for mechanical degree in bits pilani.
Hi Deepak
I am a good at studies but due to chicken pox just before BITSAT I could not study welland scored only 252 in BITSAT 08. Please suggest me what preference I should give and what are the chances. After getting admissions I will like to score well and migrate to better course.
Rakesh
Hi,
295 may not get your son the top four branches (EEE,CSE,E&I,Mech), but u r son can try dual by opting for MSc courses and then choosing the dual at the end of first year. BITS releases the stats, the last year cut-offs are given in the bits website.
Hi samvit,
As told earlier, predicting cut-offs is like predicting weather conditions. On a safe side i assume the final cut-offs to go around 245 to 250. You have good chances to get a seat in one of the campuses.
Hi Naresh,
Please check one of the comments where similar doubt was asked. I am posting the contents here again:
Hi kunal,
Regd. course structure and other info you can go through the BITS bulletin which gives all the details regd. any engineering branch. In a snapshot:
1. First year deals with all bridge and foundation courses, common to all the disciplines (Except C group)
2. Second year deals with some of the basic engineering courses, common to all the disciplines (Except C group)
3. Third year deals with all the core subjects that are purely related to your discipline
4. In fourth year, one semester is for thesis or internship (called as practice school) and other semester is to complete the required number of electives. Here you can choose courses which may not be related to your discipline but you wish to do for your interests.
Hi rakesh,
Your score lies near the borders. But this is all assumptions..and please dont solely rely on this. The cut-offs might go down till 240 also!
Please check the post which can provide you guidelines to fill the preferences.
can u compare iiit cs and bits cs? i wanted to know abt iiit ,someone told me that studies there are very hectic and u don't get to enjoy college life? bits is much better that way and also bits has gr8 placements.
Hi kunal,
Few IIITs like IIIT-Hyderabad has good infrastructure for Computer Science and their placements are also good. But such institutes deal with only specific engineering branches like computer science, electronics etc. They may not have the other disciplines like mechanical, chemical. This could be one of the disadvantages as the scope of your learning will then get shrunk to only few branches.
Hi Deepak,
Great Job. Made understanding BITS easier. My score is 247. Should I give Msc(biological Sciences)dual degree in Hyderabad as first preference or in Goa? In the dual degree scheme can i take E and C /E and I/ E and E by taking Msc. economics or Msc biological sciences. Please guide.Being a science student can I study economics and still score high enough for dual degree?
Minal
hi deepak,
with a score of 277 can i expect MSc.economics in pilani or the other duals in pilani(i didn't fill FPB).I put hyd at the end of my preferances since it is a new campus.please reply whether i can get in pilani
hi deepak, statistics for this year bitsat have been released, cn u comment on cutoffs this year
http://www.bitsadmission.com/admn/bitsat/statistics.htm
and last year statistics are given here
http://www.mayank.co.nr/Bitsat.Stats.txt
@minal,
Unless they(BITS authorities) have mentioned abt any restrictions in dual options, you can assume that MSc students are eligible for any BE courses. MSc Economics and Biology are structured keeping in mind abt the students background who join for such courses. Being a science student you study economics/biology and still score high enough for dual degree.
@Shailen,
The chances are little less that u will get MSc in Pilani, but u might get the same in other campuses.
hi!
is there any kind of scholarships available at bits pilani campus for reducing fees and allplease give complete description
thank u
Hi Minal,
As we already mentioned before, for you to get a gud BE degree as dual your first year percentage is important and first year is almost common for every one in the batch irrespective of your branch. So you wont be doing economics related courses right from your first year, u need not worry abt it.
Rajan,
About scholarships as i already mentioned in one of the previous post, there is a merit scholarship from the institute depending on your percentage(its called cgpa which is calculated on a scale of 10)so if u get 10/10 gpa in first sem u get ur tution fee for tat sem refunded, anything below 10 and above 9 i guess its drastically reduced upto half the amount of your tution fee(u have chk this once u enter BITS,dont know the current situation)so this is based on your previous sem performance every time...
Few people less than 5 i guess might get adita birla scholarship and its not easy to get tht.
hi deepak,
the bitsat 2008 statistics are on the bits website so wat is my chance of gettin a seat with a score of 277. or should i go for aieee(air 11,221)
waiting 4 reply
Hi shailen,
I am yet to do some analysis of latest statistics available. Shall post as soon as i come out with some info. But you have good chances of making into BITS. AIEEE rank 11231 might not fetch you a better seat than BITS.
Hi tarun,
You have raised a nice question which unfortunately is very diffucult to answer. Moreover with addition of new IITS, 1 new BITS campus, also increase in number of seats in various other colleges the guessing becomes more difficult. All these facts may bring down the cut-offs compared to last year. Let us compare this year's performance with the last year:
>=400 marks ---> 23% decrease in number of students
>=350 ---> 23% decrease
>=300 ---> 13% decrease
>=250 ---> 3.4% increase
They did not reveal the number of students who wrote BITSAT this year. As there is considerable decrease in 350+ candidates ,it can have impact on the cut-offs of the popular engineering disciplines. The number of students who crossed 300 have decreased by more than 10% compared to last year. There is also a marginal decrease in 250+ students. Besides this the other factors like new IITS (around 700seats), BITS (around 600 seats) etc wil bring the cut-offs further down. So this could mean good news for people who scored 245+ as the chances of getting seat in BITS has become even more bright. To guess which discipline you can get, you can subtract around 5 to 10 marks from previous year cut-offs and check which discipline according to your preference might come for you.
with new stats out from bits can we expect a decrease of 6-10 marks(maybe more) in core branches like cs, eee, e&i, mech. in pilani? i hav got a score of 324, last yr mech., e&i at pilani were 328,337 respectively. i think i will get mech but can i also get e&i.
which do u think is a better course among the two?
Hi,
As a current BITSian I fully agree with your preferences order. There is a misconception even amongst the BITSians that B group is not good in terms of prospects. This post will help some way in alleviating that concern.
Hi.
The number of people registered was about 1.16 lakhs (got it from somewhere on BITS site). However, all would not have appeared as in previous years around 10-15% did not take the test. Probable number would be around 90-95 thousand I guess.
Thanx for all your guidance. This is a very tough year to make predictions!
MY SCORE IS 253 WAT CAN I EXPECT
Hi kunal,
Between E&I and Mech..its first upto you what are u r interests in. E&I as i said earlier is almost similar to the course structure of EEE. you will have future scope in eletronics, VLSI, Embedded, Communications, Automation, Instrumentation. Mech on other hand has future scope in Mechatronics, Automobile design etc., Placements are good for both but better for E&I.
hi,
this is amit. i scored 302 in bitsat 2008. do i have any chances of getting BE(hons)in civil oe chemical in pilani campus.
please reply.
thx 4 the info.
Hey,
I got 257 in bitsat and 5415 in aieee with state rank 1088(A.P).I am applying for counselling and need some help for the preference order.(5 best options will do). Also wanted to ask whether my aieee rank will fetch me something good.
NIKHIL
Hey Deepak, nice work!!
I have given BITSAT this year and have secured 265. Can i get atleast a dual in Hyd Campus? Not many have scored in the 260s range so i didn't get an answer from your blog. What are my chances? Pls reply!!!
Hai Deepak,
Good morning,
thanks for all the suggestions.I may be getting mech in NIT and also hoping to get Mech or E & I in BITS hyd.(311 MARKS).Ur expert comments.I have preferred hyd over goa. With the statistics now out .What is probability of getting cs or ECE in hyd with the marks of 311.
thank U.
DEAR DEEPAK,
I am eager to see ur reply and other expert comments.Somehow ur blog activated all of us in a full swing for bits. Also pl.unbiasedly evaluate bits hyd.campus with any top NITS.U r deserving all sort of appreciation for this wonderful blog.
regards
RAJA
i got 351.my preference order is.
CS
eee
mech.
E&I
I gave preference to mech. coz some of my frnds in BITS(now entering third year) suggested that
companies in Placements prefer EEE students over E&I although they study the same stuff. And E&I is a kind of hard working less paying kind of branch means alot of study involved.
What are ur views??????
Hi
@ kunal,
Both the disciplines are very good and established. If you have interests in chips, mobiles, processors then E&I is better option and if you are inclined towards gears and shafts, automobiles etc then opt for Mech.
@ Anand,
It would very good if people like you from BITS campuses involve in this discussion as you ppl are students in BITS currently.
@ NS,
Yes indeed, the predictions for this time are very tricky.
@ Animesh,
You can check the previous year cut-offs and guess on your own. You have fair chances of getting civil/chemical/mech at pilani campus.
@ Nikhil,
your score is little less. You might get a seat in NITs based on your AIEEE rank but predicting the branch can be difficult. If you get better discipline in NITs, then you can try that.
@ Yashas,
There is around minimal increase (4%) in the number of students who secured 250+ compared to last year. This means you have very good chances of getting dual.
@Raja,
Comparing a college (which will start its first academic session this year) with established NITs is not correct. In such case NITs are definitely better than BITS-Hyd. What you need to look is the long term perspective taking into account few of these factors:
1. Course curricula
2. College popularity
2. Placement scenario
3. Alumni contacts
now judge yourself :)
@ Anonymous,
Well I am an E&I pass-out and I never faced any problems for placements, and its not the "hard working, less paying" career. Its infact as rewarding as any other discipline. I am surprised that bitsians have given you this info.
hi
i have scored 258 in bitsat. do i have any chances of getting a dual in hyderabad?. i have not applied for biology.
hi deepak,
i got 341 in bitsat and my pref go like this
cs pilani
ece hyd
cs hyd
cs goa
and the rest
i think hyderabad can surge ahead of goa in no time,so i took a gamble, what do u say????,im not at all interested in eee
Many in Hyderabad believe tht Bits Hyderabad is going to be the best Campus,so i went by them,i think the construction may not be complete when college starts but by the end of first year i think we can expect a world class campus, and then many wud prefer hyderabad ahead of goa in 2009 bitsat,
HYDERABAD IS A SURE BET because
more thn 75 percent of bits pilani alumni are andhrites,so they wud giv donations to hyderabad campus ahead of goa
many profs are geting transferred to hyd frm pilani coz of the weather and city
and any new profesor will prefer hyderabd over rest 2 because of the city and the clean image the city has
Hyderabad campus is the only campus to have ece branch,
i just saw in ur blog dat a CGPA of 7.5+ wil fetch us a csc seat in any campus acc to las yr..dealing wid a MSc ..,
so do u think a student wid a score of 270 in bitsat can be able to acheive this CGPA ???
i wanted to take ur opinion on the new iits. how would u compare it with bits(all campuses)? my elders r telling me to join new iits coz they hav an iit tag, also courses offered there are gud.i hav a gud chance of getting mech and even e&i at pilani. i am mainly sceptical abt the infrastructure at the new iits.
plz give an unbiased opinion, if u can give pros n cons of both it would be easier for me to decide.
@Tarun,
Selecting a college based on city is not the only criteria, the establishment, experience and infrastructure quality is also very important. Professor might opt to teach in particular branch of BITS depending upon his interests and priorities but not solely based on the geographical location of the campus.
@Anonymous,
Scoring around 8 in BITS in my view should not be difficult if you study regularly with interest. I have seen many students whose BITSAT score was very low and they were able to score 9+ throughout. Also there were few whose BITSAT score was 350+ yet managed to scrap 7+.
@Kunal,
What your elders are suggesting is not doubt reasonable but keep in mind that your decision to choose a college should not be solely based on brand but various other factors. What you need to look is the long term perspective taking into account few of these factors:
1. Course curricula
2. College popularity
2. Placement scenario
3. Alumni contacts
now judge yourself :)
The new IITS will start their academic session under the guidance from other experienced IITs. The new IITs campuses dont have their campuses as of now. Also they havent mentioned clearly as how the transformation of faculty and induction of new faculty would take place. Starting of new IITs from this year itself, i felt was a little hasty decision from govt. Since you said that you would be getting E&I or Mech in Pilani, I suggest you to go for BITS.
BITS Pilani Gets First Rank in Outlook Magazine Top Professional Colleges Survey !!!
www.newswiretoday.com/news/36015
but deepak,iiit-h,isb got name only becoz of facilities hyderabad could offer
TODAY ISB IS LEADING MBA COLLGE IN INDIA
TODAY IIIT IS LEADING COLLEGE FOR CS IN INDIA
TOMMOROW BITS HYDERABAD WILL BE TOP ENGG COLLEGE IN INDIA
SO GUYS IF PPL WRITE ANYTHING LOW ABOUT BITS HYDERABAD PLZ IGNORE IT,
I CAME ACROSS FEW LEWD REMARKS THT VIT IS FAAR BETTER THN BITS H AND THT BITS HYD DOESNT HAVE GUD INFRASTRUCTURE SUPPORT,JUST GIV A LAUGH AT THEM,COME AND SEE ITS CAMPUS THEN U WILL KNOW,
REMEMBER IF BITS GOA CAN BECOME BETTER, THN ITS OBVIOUS THT BITS HYD WILL BECOME THE BEST
BITS PILANI MANAGEMENT IS WORKING VERY HARD ON DEVELOPING THE HYDERABAD CAMPUS COZ AN IIT WHICH IS COMING UP SOME 80 KMS FRM THE CITY WILL OVERSHADOW BITS HYDERABAD,SO TO STAY IN COMPETITION BITS HYDERABAD HAS TO GET WORLD CLASS FACILITIES WHCIH BITS MANAGEMENT HAS TO PROVIDE AT ANY COST,
IT CAN AFFORD IIT HYDERABAD TO OVERSHADOW BITS HYDERABAD
SO GO AHEAD AND GIVE HYDERABAD SECOND PREF OVER GOA LIKE ME,
PERSONALLY I DINT CHOSE GOA IN MY PREF LIST COZ I DONT WANT TO BE RELATED WITH BEACH AND BOOZE,
SO ONLY ADVICE TO DEEPAK AND OTHERS IS "DONT UNDERESTIMATE BITS HYDERABAD" ,
AS U TOLD
1. Course curricula
2. College popularity
2. Placement scenario
3. Alumni contacts
1.COURSE CURRICULA IS SIMILAR TO THAT OF BITS PILANI SO NO QUESTION ARISES THERE
2.COLLEGE POPULARITY,BITS HYDERABAD IS IMMENSELY POPULAR IN ANDHRA PRADESH AND AS U ALREADY KNOW MORE THN 75 PERCENT OF BITS PILANI STUDENTS ARE FRM ANDHRA PRADESH.
NEARLY 20000 ASPIRANTS TOOK BITSTAT FROM ANDHRA PRADESH,OUT OF 100000,IT MEANS SOME 20 PERCENT ARE FRM ANDHRA PRADESH
THIS TIME BITS HAS ADDED ONE MORE TEST CENTRE FRM ANDHRA PRADESH DUE TO ITS POPULARITY IN STATE
3.PLACEMENTS SCENARIO - CANT COMMENT MUCH BUT DUE TO HYDERABAD BEING A SOFTWARE HUB AND A MAJOR PROJECT LIKE FAB CITY COMING AROUND THE CITY THERE IS NO NEED TO WORRY,
4.ALUMNI CONTACTS - I DONT KNOW WAT DEEPAK MEANT BY ALUMNI CONTACTS,BUT TO SAY BITS PILANI HAS VERY LARGE ALUMNI NETWORK CALLED BITSAA,DEEPAK MIGHT BE KNOWING THIS
AND AS FAR AS INFRASTRUCTURE IS CONCERNED,AS FAR AS I KNOW,EVRYTHING HAS BEEN FINISHED,BIT HAS EVEN APPOINTED PHYSICAL DIRECTOR WHICH MEANS THT EVEN PLAYGROUNDS ARE ALSO COMPLETE
SO AL THOSE PPL WHO CRY THT "BITS GOA IS BETER THN BITS HYD" PLZ STOP THT CRY OR CHANGE THE TUNE
AND AS DEEPAK SAID NITS ARE FAR BETER THN BITS HYD,
LEMME CHALLENGE HIM,"STAY IN BITS HYD HOSTEL ONE DAY,THEN GO AND STAY IN ANY NIT HOSTEL ONE DAY"
U CNT DARE TO ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE
AS FAR AS HYDERABAD IS CONCERNED,W
IT TOOK JUST 8 YEARS FOR ISB TO OVERTAKE IIM AHMEDABAD,THERE WERE MANY MBA COLLEGES SETUP,Y EVEN BITS HAS ONE MBA COLLEGE IN PILANI,DO U THINK IT WILL BECOME AS SUCCESFUL AS ISB
@tarun
u can't say that isb developed its name bcoz of its location don't underestimate the work done by the faculty and students. another reason for its overtaking iim's is due to the criteria that only people with 5yr experience are allowed. this thing matters a lot as some of my seniors tell me that they find it very diff. to cope with ones with work ex. ur idea that it's bcoz of of its location is pretty stupid.
ok kunal, leave ISB,why iiit allahabad dint get the same name as that of iiit hyderabad
Hyderabad is a educational Hub and if u still cant accept it then i leave it to urself,
Hyderabad was chosen so as to make bits hyderabad a world class institute
i got 230 in bitsat 2008 do i have a chance of getting in BPharm(hons) or any of the MSc(hons)?
@tarun
well i agree to a certain extent with u. i personally fee few yrs but not pilani in even a decade.and in a decade a lot of changes can take place, hyd being a software hub now might not remain in d future or something. u can't bank on this factor for choosing a college b/w pilani and hyd. though hyd. over goa might not be a bad option.
all this is my view, some might not agree.
hi sir
i got 295.any chance of an msc(hons) in goa or pilani..pl help
@ tarun & others
srry for the above reply being badly wrtten. i ate away quite some words.
tarun i felt that u were taking bits hyd. above pilani, but the idea of hyd above goa might not be a bad one seeing that both are comparatively new .
p.s: don't associate bits goa with party and booze, its a general misconception among a lot of parents.there are strict guidelines from the campus related to time limits.like 10.30 is college lockdown whereas 11 is hostel deadline.
it cant overtake pilani,i accept tht but it can be seeen as equal to pilani,or a little les thn tht in future,
overtaking pilani is also a option which cant be ruled out
iit kharagpur was started first, but now its the students last choice
placements wise also now many iits are scoring far better thn kharagpur,
so kunal put un money on hyderabad,i assure u tht you wont lose even a penny
and as far ur views on hyderabad is concerned,it might not be a software hub a life long, but its far bettter thn goa and pilani(village) in case of number of companies..
it cant overtake pilani,i accept tht but it can be seeen as equal to pilani,or a little les thn tht in future,
overtaking pilani is also a option which cant be ruled out

hai, sorry for asking again i got 230 in bitsat 2008 do i have a chance of getting in BPharm(Hons) or any of the MSc(Hons).i am in a hurry as i have to pay fee for other colleges.please give a reply as soon as possible
@anonymous
no chance
@Anonymous,
Chances are very bleak. If you are getting a good stream in other college, verify abt the college before finalizing on it.
hii deepak,
what are my chances at 245 4 any one of the bits courses except B pharma and msc biological sciences
hi,
i've scored 273 in bistat this year.
after looking at the statistics of this yr's bitsat,i was a bit worried..
Can I stay confident that i can get any discipline in bits apart from B.Pharm&Msc.Bio-sciences in any campus at first iteration itself ??
plz reply as i don't have any hopes on other entrances..!!
@ anonymous at 273 it is hard to get anything in the first iteration.. last year's cutoff for 1st iteration was 304 (not for sure) and that of 2nd iteration was 285..this year it may be around (guess)300-290 and 285-270 for 1st and 2nd iteration respectively ..you have to wait till 2nd iteration.. many will drop out after first iteration..these marks are good enough to get your desired courses(last year cutoffs were around 260), be confident..
hi,
my score in bit-sat-08, is 277 and i want to take Msc(hons) in mathematics at pilani so that later i can opt for dual degree.last year the cut off for it was 293,so do you think i have got a fair chance to get in there?
thanks a lot for ur support
Hi Jatin,
Vardhan has already replied for a similar question. I hope it will clear your doubts.
Good news !!
I am glad to announce that I am going to start another dedicate blog which will have information on many other aspects like electives, placements, extra-curricular activities, rankings, higher studies etc. I might also cover other reputed colleges, admission criteria, counseling etc soon. This post will also be shifted to the new location. Keep watching this space for the link !
RESPECTED SIR,
I HAVE SCORED 328 IN BITSAT. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW OF IF WOULD BE ABLE TO GET MECHANICAL, PILANI ANF IF SO, AFTER HOW MANY ITERATION WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE? IS THERE ANY CHANCE FOR ME OF GETTING E&I OR EVEN EEE IN PILANI?

so for 273, can i be selected for ne FES discipline ??
@ alok
cs is best at iiit hyderabad.it is said to be the mecca of cs in india.if u can get there take it.
hi
can u pl explain me the funda of 5 iterations and more over during my exam i appealed for some questions as i felt there were no right ans in given options,so how will i know my final marks as nothing abt it is said on there site
thanks a lot for ur help
240 is little low score and even if you get into BITS, I am not sure which branch will come for you. Getting a MSc or BE looks difficult. You can better try other colleges till the results are out.
@Alok,
One of the student has asked the similar question. Please read the comments are search for similar queries. :). I am posting the reply the same here:
Few IIITs like IIIT-Hyderabad has good infrastructure for Computer Science and their placements are also very good. But such institutes deal with only specific engineering branches like computer science, electronics etc. They may not enjoy the benefits of being with other disciplines like mechanical, chemical. This could be one of the disadvantages as the scope of your learning will then get reduced to only few branches. Few of my friends in BITS chose electives like portfolio management, print and advertising, theory of relativity, gandhian philosphy etc., The fruits of belonging to such institute will be seen in the long run. This may not be possible at IIIT-Hyderabad. Also the benefit of workshops, festivals, conferences related to varied fields will not be available at such institutes. If you are strictly concerned about only computer science and placements then IIIT-Hyderabad can be a better option.
Iterations are similar to counseling sessions. Few students opt out of the BITS admission process at a later stage and those seats become vacant. Another round of iteration is done to fill those seats. The number of iterations depend upon how many seats are vacant after the previous iterations.
GOOD NEWS !!
